6 Tips to Protect Your Family’s Eyes
During Screen Time
Are you experiencing digital eye strain? Even in the new year, many of us are still working and taking classes from home, which has resulted in a huge jump in screen time for everyone. Now more than ever, it’s important to take care of your eyes in this new normal. Here are 6 tips to help mitigate the negative effects of increased screen time.
Set Screen Time Limits
Studies have shown the average screen time for kids and teens has increased to more than 6 hours a day, and that’s not including the time spent using screens for school. It’s not always an option, but limiting your family’s digital screen time can protect their eyes from computers and can help prevent digital eye strain.
Adjust the Lighting
Don't make your eyes work harder than they need to. Squinting to look at a screen can lead to eye strain and headaches. Minimize screen glare and uncomfortable neck postures by reducing overhead lighting and window sunlight.
Change Your Positioning
Similar to what you’ve heard about TVs, sitting too close to your computer can lead to straining your neck, back, and eyes. Keep your face about arm’s length from your digital screen and slightly below eye level to help keep your eyes and body in tip-top shape. Using progressive lenses or computer lenses may help as well.
Nobody likes dry, itchy eyes. When we’re busy working and reading on digital screens, we tend to blink less. Using a humidifier or lubricant drops can help relieve these symptoms of dryness.
Use Blue Light Filtering Lenses
All digital screens emit blue light, and exposure to it can lead to eye strain and difficulty focusing. Blue light filtering lenses can help prevent these symptoms and protect your eyes from computer screens.
Follow the 20/20/20 Rule
You may not realize it, but your eyes are working hard! Every 20 minutes, give them a break from staring at a screen by looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Scheduling An Eye Exam
Extra screens mean extra digital eye strain, so it's important to schedule an eye exam at your neighborhood Pearle Vision and get the eye care you deserve!
